In the story of Paper Pills, Dr. Reefy’s rough knuckles are compared to the appearance of the twisted apples. In the chapter, it stated that “Only the few know the sweetness of the twisted apples,” meaning that most ignore the twisted apples because of their looks, but they are actually very nice and sweet. The twisted apples never make it to the city to be sold, effectively making the apples outsiders in the appearance qualities, by being outsiders the apples are also being authentic and non-conformists, relating them to themes from Catcher in the Rye.
