The novel Winesburg, Ohio touches upon the ideas of the key tension insider versus outsider in the first chapter, titled Hands. Wing Biddlebaum exemplifies loneliness and alienation, "Wing Biddlebaum, forever frightened..." (pg 9). By being an individual with some quirks, Wing effectively puts himself apart from all the rest of the citizens of the town, making him an outsider. This is shows that in a small town, almost anything can be the curse which casts you out from the group.
