In Raisin in the Sun, appearance versus reality is tested through the families different ideas of what they would like to do with the money. Momma Lena would like to invest in a new house in order to help rebuild the broken down family. Beneatha would like some of the money to help pay for her school expenses, and Walter Lee would like to make a foolish investment. Walter Lee’s investment did not turn out well, which required the family to work more in order to have the new house. The money was best suited for purchasing the house and paying off some of Beneatha’s college bills, but being overcome with delusion, Walter Lee makes a faulty investment, and then faces a tough reality when he realizes what has happened to the money. By being delusional, one becomes very selfish, which is the opposite of what a united nation is supposed to be.
