American Beauty is a film portraying a middle-aged suburban dad, Lester Burnham, who is unsatisfied with his life, and seeks to make changes when he falls for his daughter’s teenage friend, Angela Hayes, who is in fact out of his league. He has sexual fantasies of her, in which roses are a motif. Angela Hayes appears to be the model teen which others envy, but in reality has low self-esteem. Jane, his daughter, is what she appears which is a confused, sulky teen, with a bit of hope in her. The movie shows that within normal people’s lives, they often dream of better things for themselves, and some make them a reality. Some are infested with delusion, causing them to not only hurt their sanity but the other’s live’s around them, delusion is similar to a serious sickness infecting a person. Lester was able to make some of his dreams a reality, and this changed him from being a common man, to a man of higher knowledge who was able to see the beauty in life, making his end not a tragedy.
