In Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby, Gatsby gives the appearance of a well brought up gentleman from riches. When in reality he gained his money from shady dealings, and he is in fact not an Oxford man, he simply had opportunities from the war. Gatsby tries to be something he is not in order to win over Daisy when attempting to repeat the past, which eventually fails. Gatsby is filled with delusion which was not the downfall of him, but it did prey on him. The character Gatsby shows that delusion hides people away from their harsh realities so they do not have to face their troubles.
